The Magnolia Collection

Before starting on the large 38x48 inch magnolia painting for The Carolina Inn, I made several 11x14 inch studies. I submitted my two favorites, and the Inn selected one as the inspiration for their commission. I had worked so hard on the studies, loved them, and had tons of magnolia reference photos that I took at UNC’s campus. So I decided to paint a few more in order to make the series available for you!

The three paintings above were some of the studies for the Inn- since I knew the painting would be so large I wanted several blooms. The study pictured above on the far left is one that I submitted for them to choose from (they chose another, which I am keeping for myself as a memento of the special commission!).

As I sat at my easel to create a few more paintings to round out this series, I wanted to paint just single blooms. Magnolias are such statement flowers, with big welcoming blooms. I loved the more complex and fun compositions I created with the multi-bloom paintings, but I was interested in focusing on just one flower for a few paintings as well.

Each of these six paintings (3 multi-bloom and 3 single bloom) is 11x14 inches, oil on linen panel. They are easy to pop into a frame since the size is standard, but I am offering an optional frame sold separately on my site to help you get these right onto your walls!

I am also excited to offer two custom painting spots with this collection. There will be a separate listing in my shop for a 24x30 or 30x40 inch commission, and you will select from these six small paintings for the inspiration. The process of enlarging one of my paintings to this scale was incredibly fun- there was so much to explore in the color and value shifts, brush mark texture, and interaction of layers!
