The 3 Hour Still Life

This online painting course is perfect for you if:

  • You are an artist working in a medium other than oil paint, and you’d like a straightforward introduction to painting with oils.

  • You are an abstract artist and want to learn how to depict life accurately - still life, people, animals, landscapes, interiors. This could be a fun way to develop your sketchbook practice, or to increase your skills if you are adding hints of imagery in your work. While this course focuses on still life, the foundational skills of seeing color and value, and drawing accurately will help you with any representational art.

  • You love art but haven’t taken classes since childhood. In Julia Cameron’s words, you were a ‘Shadow Artist’ (The Artist’s Way) up until now. But you are ready to take yourself seriously and move “into the light of creativity.” This was me until I enrolled in online painting lessons in 2017. “Give yourself permission to be a beginner. By being willing to be a bad artist, you have a chance to BE an artist, and perhaps over time, a very good one.”

  • You want to learn to complete a simple painting in just three hours or less!

About the instructor

I developed this course after selling my work professionally for five years, and have taught my still life method in person for three years to over seven cohorts of students in North Carolina.

I studied studio art and elementary education at UNC Chapel Hill, graduating in 2011. Since then, I have taught art at several Montesorri schools, community centers, and art museums, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the Frist Art Museum. I earned my Master of Education in learning and design in 2017 from Vanderbilt, and studied with an internationally known painter in 2017 and 2018.

My work is available through the online galleries Well and Wonder and Artfully Walls as well as my own website. When not teaching or in the studio, you can find me helping my toddler down the slide on repeat at local parks, walking my dog in the woods, or baking the newest recipe from Smitten Kitchen.

“I am thrilled about what I have already gained from your instruction, and looking forward to learning so much more!”

Amy C.

“I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying this experience. I somehow missed art classes from kindergarten on, so I signed up to do something I had never done. Little did I know that I would end up with a true teacher.”

FAQs

  • The curriculum is self-paced. With that said, in addition to the time watching the videos, viewing PDFs, and reading instructions, you can expect to spend at least one hour on each of the three color mixing exercises, and three hours on each of the still life painting exercises. That totals 15 hours of hands on painting. The video demos total 85 minutes. There are 8 total lessons, so if you complete one per week the full course would take about 8 weeks!

  • When you purchase the course you will create an account with a log-in and password. This will grant you access to the course for the course’s lifetime, including any small updates or improvements made to it over time. In the event that the course will no longer be available, you will receive 8 weeks notice so that you have time to complete the course in full.

  • Yes! Many of my in-person students have had no prior experience and enjoyed this exact curriculum. Since I cover materials, set up, color mixing, and drawing fundamentals, you will be able to learn how to paint a still life no matter your background with art.

  • Yes! If you are not regularly painting still lifes with oil paint, then this class is perfect for you! It would be a great fit for an artist who works in a medium other than oil or who works abstractly. Or an artist who already paints representationally with oil and feels that my skill level is above yours and you can learn from me!

  • Due to my experience teaching this exact curriculum and being confident in its results, as well as the nature of the program that gives you immediate and full access to all lessons, videos, assignments, and PDFs, there are no refunds available for The 3 Hour Still Life.

  • You will get the full supply list when you purchase the course, but you can download my FREE materials guide here, which is very similar. (Just wait to purchase supplies until you get into the course so you can have the specific list). One thing to note is that I use oil paint throughout the course- not water mixable oil paint, and not any other type of paint. You are welcome to take the course and use a different medium such as water mixable oils or acrylics with slow drying medium added. However, I do not have experience with these media, do not cover them in course, and will not provide a refund for students who elect not to use oils.
